Village tours

Bukit Lawang is a small riverside village located near the mountains of the Gunung Leuser National Park. It only takes an hour to walk around the village, so if you’re feeling more adventurous why not join us on one of our two package tour options visiting the surrounding villages?

Immerse yourself in the local culture. Travel by becak or bicycle to local villages passing through rice fields and green forests. Learn more about the process of palm sugar refinement and rice production on our 3 hour village tour. Or journey further to the beautiful village of Selang Pangeran on our 8-9 hour cycling tour where you can plant trees, swim or BBQ.

Option 1. Becak tour

After breakfast, your guide will collect you at 8.30am from your guesthouse and you will start your journey by traditional becak (tuk tuk) to a local village. On your 3 hour trip, you will visit local rice fields and learn about the process of rice production, from the fields to the nearby rice refinery plant. You will also get the chance to visit a palm sugar plantation, find out how the sap is refined into brown sugar, and some of the traditional uses for palm sugar. Along the way, your guide will help you to pick fruit straight from the tree (depending on the season) for you to sample. Lunch will be at a local restaurant where you will have the opportunity to sample various Indonesian meals.

During the village tour, experience how the people live. Talk to them, hear their stories, play games with their children and discover their world.

Option 2. Cycling tour

After breakfast, your guide will collect you at 8.30am from your guesthouse with your mountain bike and you will start your 8-9 hour adventure. Pass through rice fields and green forests as you cycle to small villages and the traditional market. Along the way, your guide will help you to pick fruit straight from the tree (depending on the season) for you to sample. You will stop for lunch at a local restaurant giving you the opportunity to sample local dishes whilst relaxing and enjoying the beautiful views of Mount Leuser. Your trip will also include a visit to the beautiful, small village of Selang Pangeran. Here, you will be able to plant trees, enjoy a BBQ or swim in the river.
